What is an Adrenal Stress Test?
The adrenal glands are often referred to as the “stress glands” and allow our bodies to deal with stress. Whether stress comes from the outside world such as an earthquake or inside due to a perceived stress such as anxiety due to job concerns, the adrenal glands help your body adapt to the circumstance. An adrenal stress test assesses your Cortisol and DHEA levels. High Levels of Cortisol often result in insomnia, anxiety, sugar cravings, fatigue, weight gain, and bone loss. A decrease in DHEA sulfate may be due to adrenal gland disorders that produce lower than normal amounts of adrenal hormones, including adrenal insufficiency and Addison’s disease, the pituitary gland not producing normal amounts of its hormones (hypopituitarism), and taking glucocorticoid medicines.

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for the Test?
Just a saliva sample 4 times a day, is enough to identify your Cortisol and DHEA levels. As stress can raise your Cortisol levels, you may want to rest before your test. We also do not recommend discontinuing any medication without contacting your physician first.
What do the Results Mean?
Your adrenal stress test results will provide you with a comprehensive view of your current Cortisol and DHEA levels in order to better understand your health and make any necessary diet or lifestyle changes, or possible treatment of your adrenal glands.
